What is BMI and How is it Calculated?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical measure that uses your weight and height to estimate whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. The formula for calculating BMI is: BMI = weight (kg) / height squared (m squared).
BMI was introduced by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century, and today it is used by health organizations worldwide as a quick way to assess body weight. You can find more about the standards on the official World Health Organization website.
Limitations of the BMI Calculator
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has certain limitations. It does not differentiate between muscle mass and fat tissue, meaning athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI even though they are not obese. It also does not take into account body fat distribution or factors such as age and ethnicity.
For a more complete picture of your health, consider using other measures such as waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, or body fat percentage. Check out our other health calculators for additional information.
How to Achieve a Healthy Body Weight
Maintaining a healthy body weight involves a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins, along with regular physical activity. At least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week is recommended.
